AN APPEAL NOT TO CRIMINALISE INDONESIAN ISLAM

The brutal bombing which rocked Bali, Indonesia and the whole world threatens to be yet another quiver in the bow of those bent on creating a clash between civilizations. Although who armed the hands of the murderers, it is not yet clear, already an entire country would appear to be suspect. In a situation still confused, where any connection between murderous terrorism and the Islamic community of the archipelago still remains to be proven, it is important to avoid associating condemnation of the massacre with univocal denunciation of Indonesian Muslims whose tradition, despite a few radical strains, is historically peaceful, moderate and among the most tolerant. The risk of associating Indonesia’s entire Muslim community with the destabilizing maneuvers that used terrorism in the Bali bombing, is the best weapon we can supply to those seeking to provoke new wars, new misunderstandings, hoping perhaps even to profit from this possible result.
